Meet Zuma, the family dog we finally got after 22 long years of asking my mum Zuma is an English Cocker Spaniel who we rehomed at 4 years old, through Second Chance Spaniel Rescue. Although he had been loved by his previous family, they had struggled to meet his needs especially when his son came along to join their family too, a bouncy Sprocker boy who was way too much for Zuma, overbearing and stealing all the toys!
Zuma is much better suited to being an only dog and his confidence came on leaps and bounds when he settled in with us, learning about the fun of toys and reliving some of his puppyhood! As with many Spaniels, when Zuma came to us he pulled like a train on the lead and his recall was questionable at times, especially if there was wildlife around! After much perseverance and some ups and downs he has vastly improved, with walks and adventures together being fun and enjoyable rather than stress inducing! As per his breed, Zuma is a super clever boy and loves training, especially when food is involved! Trick work is one of his favourites as he loves all the handler interaction and fuss that goes with it! At almost 8, he still needs regular and appropriate stimulation and enrichment as, like many of his counterparts, he will go ‘self-employed’ if not given a job to do, resulting in the mischief!
I am hugely passionate about giving dogs a second chance and absolutely love working with rescue dogs. There are so many dogs out there looking for that special someone, and who knows, they could be your special someone too!
