Its due to be hot again over the next few days so let’s make sure we advocate for our dogs to keep them happy and healthy! My top tips are:
Your dog will be fine if you skip a walk! - especially puppies, older dogs, overweight dogs, double coated breeds and flat faced breeds who are at the highest risk of heat stroke!
If you do want to get a walk in, go early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler - and pick a nice shady area like a woodland!
Pavements can heat up quickly, do the pavement test with your hand and aim to walk in grassy areas if you must!
Avoid car trips and NEVER leave your dog in a hot car, even with the window open!
Always have clean, cool, fresh drinking water available.
Choose enrichment activities such as play in paddling pools or frozen kong treats to keep brains occupied and bodies calm!
Scent work or learning a new trick can be a great option for dogs who need that extra stimulation and can be done indoors in cooler areas to help keep their temperature down!
Let them rest! We often don’t feel like doing a lot on a hot day and it is the same for our dogs, if they are happy to chill out and relax it is not a bad thing! In fact having an off switch is really important!
What are you doing with your dogs?! Let me know in the comments!
